Tonight my beautiful wife took me to go see “The Civil Wars” at Hotel Cafe here in Hollywood. All I can say is WOW. This band blew my mind in so many ways. I think the thing that stuck me the most was the honesty in their lyrics. I’m a sucker for a broken heart and they sure could deliver. The song that hit me the hardest was Poison & Wine, a beautiful picture of being in a relationship with someone and staying committed and faithful even in the midst of heart ache and trouble. I can honestly say that I haven’t been that moved by a song since the first Damien Rice album. If you have the time grab a warm glass of whiskey and listen to it. You’ll be in tears.
During the set they also talked about their writing process being less of a scientific process and more like following a muse. Beautiful and inspiring. It made me think of a lot of my favorite songwriters and how their main commitment was to chasing there inspiration, not just putting out a product that they could sell. They all wanted to lead us somewhere. Sometimes that place was beautiful and transparent, sometimes it was dark and scary but it was always honest. Thank-you Neil Young, Damien Rice, Bob Dylan, Tracy Chapman, Ryan Adams, Jackson Browne. Thanks for putting something true into the world, for always following the bread crumbs. And thank you to the Civil Wars for being a glass of cool water in this crazy city tonight.
